Surviving and Thriving: Heather’s Mesothelioma Victory

Heather Von St. James reached out to me in hopes that I could bring awareness to mesothelioma and her story of survival. Before, I had never even heard of this type of cancer. It is caused by exposure to asbestos. Each year, around 3,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with this type of cancer, and another 20 million people are estimated to be at risk! Mesothelioma Awareness Day was September 26, but it’s never too late to bring awareness. Below are a few more facts about mesothelioma.

Heather found out that she had mesothelioma as the mother of a precious 3-month old daughter, and a wife of six years to her beloved husband. If nothing was done, the prognosis was 15 months to live. With treatment, the doctor gave her 5 years. An experimental procedure was offered to Heather and her husband, and they opted for this.  That was 10 years ago, and she has been in remission since her treatment finished!

A big theme that Heather writes about in her story is fear. Cancer is a dreaded word, and it became a reality in her life.  Heather prayed a lot during her treatment and she learned not to let fear dictate her life. She survived this immense trial and knows that she could still live in fear of many things. But she’s learned that fear is harmful to us and that it doesn’t allow us to truly live. So she and her family live in each moment as it comes, and cherish that moment.
