Battling Insomnia & Getting a Good Night’s Sleep.

Lately I’ve heard many people mention their inability to sleep at night. This is a

frustrating problem! Sleep is crucial to our physical and mental well-being, as well as our ability to fulfill our daily tasks. Insomnia isn’t normally something I struggle with, but unfortunately I’ve also had my recent bouts of it. There are a few key things that I’ve found helpful for myself, and I will share a few of those tips, as well as some others. Did you know that the journey to falling asleep more easily actually starts long before your head hits the pillow? Here are a few tips that may be useful in battling insomnia and falling asleep more easily:

Exercise regularly. There are actually studies which have found that exercise promotes falling asleep easier. Exercise may even help your Circadian rhythm to harmonize itself.

Write a to-do list for the next day. If you find yourself worried about all that has been left undone, write it down. That way you can relax a bit more while also not being stressed out about forgetting what you need to do the next day.

Limit your screen time before bed. It’s best to cut out screens a few hours before you go to bed. If you do find yourself needing to using screens, there are actually glasses you can wear which will help to block out some of the light and allow you to use screens without disrupting your body’s clock. There are also apps that you can download for your phone or computer, including Twilight, which will cut out some of the unnecessary brightness after a certain hour.

Make sure that light isn’t interfering with your ability to sleep. For those living in big cities, streetlights filtering in through the windows can make it very difficult to sleep. When there is light, your body has difficulty falling asleep because light normally means daytime! There is something called “blackout blinds” which are very effective in making a room dark and promoting better sleep. Make sure that any alarm clocks or other electronics aren’t shining where you can see them.

Watch your caffeine intake. Some people need to cut out caffeine after a certain hour of the day, or else they will have great difficulty falling asleep. You may need to limit caffeine throughout the day. Figure out your body’s unique makeup. For myself, I’ve had to cut out caffeine completely. I’m a huge tea-drinker, but after some terrible nights of not being able to fall asleep and feeling wired, I realized that it’s just not worth it. I stick to caffeine-free herbal teas now.

Drink a cup of chamomile tea before bed. I’ve definitely found this to be calming and helping me to wind down. There are many varieties of chamomile tea at the store. At one point I was drinking chamomile tea with lavender, which I really enjoyed. I think a cup of chamomile tea actually helps me to sleep more deeply and get a better night’s sleep as well.

Journal. If you are finding yourself going through a lot, this can be especially helpful. Journal is a relaxing and meditative practice. If you have a lot on your mind, journaling can help you to process this, and to possibly feel less stressed out.

Pray. I’ve written before about the Examen. This prayer is a great way to wind down and wrap up your day. The prayer consists of different parts, but basically you are processing your day before your Creator, including how you are feeling God’s presence, as well as ways that you can do better in life. Any way that you can connect with God at the end of the day can be relaxing and bring more contentment to your life in general.

Are you anxious? Everyone has troubles and challenges. If you are finding that anxiety is having effects on your life, including your ability to fall asleep or stay asleep, please talk to a counselor. There is no shame in doing so! Not only will you find yourself better able to sleep as your anxiety improves, but you’ll also find yourself living a life of greater freedom in all areas!

I hope that you find some or all of these tips helpful! Happy sleeping!

All the Small Things

I walked into find this on my desk one morning this week.

0531160911

All of a sudden I felt a boost of strength. I felt keenly the love of not only my coworker, but also God’s love. Knowing that someone took extra time out of their morning to stop, buy me some tea, and to write Bible verses touched me deeply. Reading the verses and message on the cup also gave me strength for the day ahead, after weeks when I felt like nothing had gone right. It was a touch from my Father in Heaven, giving me a push to be what I needed to be for those I am put in place to serve. The problems melted away and I remembered that my Father and I were in this together–it was going to be alright for me and for my clients.

Sometimes we shrug off an inspiration to say something nice or feel “too busy” to do a small act of kindness. We may not do these acts because we think that they won’t mean much. The fact is, you never know what it could mean to someone. The small things really aren’t that small. They can mean a lot and make a huge impression on someone.

Step out and do the “small things.”

What are some small ways you show you care about those around you?

Our Father’s Perfect Provision

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” Matthew 6:25-26

Our Father in Heaven never ceases to amaze me by the way He provides for us. Often, I wonder why we fail to trust Him! Worries about my material needs often swirl in my mind. Yet, the fact is that I have never gone without. God has always perfectly provided for my needs, even going above and beyond.

I received an unexpected care package in the mail this week. It was truly a blessing simply to know that someone was thinking about me. It’s a great feeling to open up a package assembled with love for you!  Yet this particular care package also illustrated to me God’s love and concern for me & even my simple wants. During these cold winter days, I love to drink tea. Recently I ran out of my favorite kind of tea & began to run low on tea in general. Sometimes things like teas are “extras” and not in the budget. Well, guess one of the items in the care package!

TEA! There is an assortment of tea in the care package. Now, I won’t have to worry about buying tea! Even this little extra, God provided for me!

Each day, God is constantly sending us little (and big!) reminders of His care for us. Sometimes, our Heavenly Father will even show us through something so simple as packets of tea! How have you seen His provision in your life lately? Once you begin to look, you will see it in numerous ways.

(Every day is a new opportunity to trust, and new situations arise that challenge us. I began writing this post yesterday, and today a new situation arose that tested me greatly! Whenever we get too comfortable, our Father always gives us a new chance to trust in His provision for us! Praise You, Jesus!)

Mornings: The Start to a Great Day!

The way in which we begin the morning can have a lot of bearing on the entire day. You know those mornings everything seems to go wrong, and the whole day is thrown off balance? Yes, starting the morning off right is very important! Cold winter mornings can be even more difficult to get out of bed for. Hopefully these small tips can help you get the day off on the right foot!

1. Praise God! This new day is a gift! You made it through the night and still have breath in your lungs! Too often we forget to praise Him. So, give thanks to God for the new day He has given! Reading a Psalm of praise is a great way you could do this. Setting a morning prayer routine is important. You can wake up earlier, or pray on the train or in the car. During this time of prayer, you can thank God for all the blessings you have, and ask for help with situations in the day ahead.

2. Drink a rejuvenating beverage. A cup of tea does wonders to keep me awake & focused at work! You can also try hot water with lemons–also very yummy and revitalizing! If you want to to drink tea or coffee, try to drink decaf–caffeine can be very addicting and not allow you to get by well without it.

3. Have your outfit ready for work or school. Now, this step is one you would have done very first–before you even went to bed the night before. It will save you lots of time in the morning and make getting ready go more smoothly. You won’t need to worry about walking out the door late simply because you couldn’t find an outfit that matched!

4. Eat breakfast. Yes, this step is very important. Choose something protein-heavy, such as eggs and bacon. Fruit is a good option for energy as well. You could even set out the cookware the night ahead to save a little time. Making breakfast does take a little extra time–but it’s worth it. You won’t be focused on your hunger and will be better able to concentrate.

These tips are very basic, but they can go a long way in getting your day off to a great start! Do you have any other tips for starting the day right?
